Construction 4.0 is a new concept that allows the industrialization of construction processes. A sector that was typically more conservative which today, thanks to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the so-called Industry 4.0, has recently spread to the construction sector, offering a window of opportunity for the pending transformation that this sector has been needing for a long time.
Hand in hand with the use of the BIM (Building Information Modeling) methodology that allows project information to be centralized in a single model, as well as reducing execution time and cost, to improve communication between the areas involved and anticipate interferences in advance. Specifically, it is about designing a digital model that is as complete as possible, and that contains not only structural information but also architectural, hydro-sanitary, HVAC, and electrical information, which allows the daily control of the project´s execution, synchronizing at the same time with the measurements and budgets made, being able to control step by step the variations of these two variables while the project progresses.
In this way, conceptualizing construction as a manufacturing industry is necessary to achieve an approximation towards an Industry 4.0 approach. The aim is to have projects like factories and with construction and production processes that industrialize and finally incorporate technology, allowing substantial improvements in costs, time, and productivity.
It is estimated that by applying construction 4.0 and BIM methodology, projects could increase their productivity by 5 or more, if they acquire a production style similar to that of the manufacturing industry and make their technological transition towards automation and the use of data. We can speak of two fundamental pillars: the industrialization of construction processes and the incorporation of emerging technologies.
Since 2020, SEDEMI has been working on the incorporation and execution of projects through the use of construction 4.0 and BIM methodology, positioning itself as a leader in Ecuador with iconic projects such as the UMCO Logistics Center, the Grupo Superior Logistics Center, the Grupo Superior Corporate Building, the La Fabril Detergent Plant, among others. In addition, SEDEMI has an industrial complex of 90,000 m2, equipped with state-of-the-art machinery. Its industrialized manufacturing processes allow it to offer integral solutions with quality above the standard.
SEDEMI believes in Construction 4.0, hand in hand with an approach that promulgates 3 pillars in its implementation, allowing the participation of people (social), business (economic) and technology (technological). It is impossible to present technology as something distant from people and their needs. In this way we seek, through people, to transform construction business models with a view to technology.
The impact of the main industry technologies in construction 4.0 is based on grouping robotics, big data, cloud, virtual reality, cybersecurity, simulation, vertical and horizontal integration, among others. The magic comes in knowing how to work with them for the benefit of the projects. In this way, the combination of technology with robotics achieves the digital transformation of the construction sector 4.0. SEDEMI presents business models and ways of doing innovative projects with quality and at the same level of the best construction companies in the world, offering employment to more than 800 people nationwide.
